Now what do we know about Caffeine and Stimulants? Well, apart from causing dependence and being habit forming... As a rule they're vasoconstrictors.
Vasocontrictors constrict blood vessels, restricting blood flow - making the heart work harder to pump blood through the body and muscles. You might know that feeling when your heart starts pounding after a cup of coffee.
If you're thinking - 'Hey that's the opposite of what a preworkout pump product is meant to do! 'NO' products are meant to increase blood flow, not reduce it!' - you're absolutely right.
The opposite of vasoconstriction is vasodilation. Vasodilation refers to blood vessels relaxing, expanding and allowing greater blood flow of oxygen and nutrients. For muscle pumps, nutrient delivery, and clearance of waste products vasodilation is what trainers want.

Arginine is found naturally in foods we eat like red meat and has been used in supplement form for ages. Unfortunately eating steak for its Arginine or fist fulls of Arginine capsules won't produce much when it comes to benefits. You need a big dose with sustained delivery.
This is where 'NO' supplements are on the right track.
The answer is a new form of Arginine. This new version of Arginine is called L-Arginine Alpha-Ketoglutarate, or commonly called 'AAKG'. AAKG puts the pump into 'NO' products - it's the valuable active ingredient that you're forking out hard earned $$ for.

The American College of Cardiology reports a study that concluded that Arginine supplementation produced a 400% increase in blood vessel dilation from 2.2 - 8.8% (Hambrecht et al. 2000). Doses of 5.6 - 12.6 grams of Arginine increased blood flow to the extremities 29%, and the distance walked on a treadmill in 6 minutes increased 8% (Rector et al. 1996).
Check out those doses used though, that's a lot higher than most 'NO' supplements provide - and note this was 'no frills' pure Arginine only, nothing else added ;-)
AAKG helps the body in the production of Nitric Oxide ('NO'). 'NO' in turn relaxes blood vessels and expands their internal diameter for greater blood flow into muscles (without increasing blood pressure) which leads us to another interesting 'side effect' of AAKG supplementation. Caution
When supplementing any L-Arginine use for up to 60 days then take a break. AAKG may cause stomach upset or nausea in sensitive people - if you think this might be you then start on a low dose to test your tolerance, and increase slightly each week.
As AAKG is a powerful nutrition supplement there are some cautions. If you are on any medication suffer from heart or blood pressure conditions, diabetes, hypoglycemia, psychosis, or glaucoma it is recommended you avoid L-Arginine supplements.
